History of fiber optics as told by Jeff Hecht

I recently came across this article from Jeff Hecht that I thought gave an interesting narrative on the development of fiber optics. With history dating back nearly two centuries and several key figures providing break throughs in the use and development of the technology, you might be as fascinated with it all as I am. Check out Jeff's well-written history for yourself in its entirety hereb2ap3_thumbnail_fiber-optics-eric-litvin.jpg

Assembling Active Optical Cables

Active optical cables (AOC) are widely used for being cost-effective and efficient, especially with the increasing demand for more bandwidth, better performance.  With increasing demand comes increasing need for assembling these cables and assembling them accurately. Lightwaveonline.com recently posted: Amicra Microtechnologies is up to the challenge and one of the worldwide leading providers of assembly tools for the manufacturing of AOC modules. The company is focusing its efforts and resources on extreme accurate placement and bonding techniques for VCSEL (vertical cavity surface emitter) chips and PIN (positive intrinsic negative) diodes. In its chosen field of precision placement processing Amicra offers high-accuracy (down to 0.5μm) microassembly cells, high-speed inking systems as well as laser and LED testing systems.
