Telia Carrier to add Coriant CloudWave Optics to pan-European fiber-optic backbone network

As reported from lightwaveonline.com, Telia Carrier to add Coriant CloudWave Optics to pan-European fiber-optic backbone network. Among the first implementations of the CloudWave Optics technology will be a 400G-enabled fiber route between Copenhagen and Frankfurt. Telia Carrier also will apply the technology to routes like a submarine cable long-haul link to London. I appreciate their drive to expand. Google is leading the pack with their undersea cable

A new undersea cable constructed with Google’s backing has just gone online linking the US west coast with Japan. The name of the cable, fittingly, is FASTER, and it is, in fact faster. To put it into perspective, the cable is about 10 million times faster than your broadband at home. The project began in 2014 and stretches more than 5,592 miles of cable. It transmits 60 terabytes of data per second. Facebook and Microsoft have announced plans to lay a cable stretching from the US to Europe that will have a capacity of 160 Tbps. Let the competition continue! Read the story in its entirety here. Thanks to extremetech.com for the story and for photo credit too. b2ap3_thumbnail_810.jpg

History of fiber optics as told by Jeff Hecht

I recently came across this article from Jeff Hecht that I thought gave an interesting narrative on the development of fiber optics. With history dating back nearly two centuries and several key figures providing break throughs in the use and development of the technology, you might be as fascinated with it all as I am. Check out Jeff's well-written history for yourself in its entirety hereb2ap3_thumbnail_fiber-optics-eric-litvin.jpg

New study shows fiber-optic broadband access increases MDU value

A study commissioned by Fiber to the Home (FTTH) Council Americas shows availability of fiber-optic broadband access to individual apartments will increase rental and property values in multiple dwelling units (MDUs) by 8% and 2.8%. For those of you who have ever lived in areas where the technology is not prevalent, you can certainly understand how this increase in value is easily derived. "Today's findings add to the growing body of evidence that fiber is a win for communities, for consumers and for property owners," said FTTH Council President and CEO Heather Burnett Gold, "This study is another tool network providers can use in their discussions with MDU owners and operators as they seek to deploy fiber, meaning faster and more numerous deployments throughout North America." flow cytometry technique growing

The flow cytometry technique is increasing in its use and applications. The laser-based technique used in an increasing number of bio-analysis applications is expected to grow to a $6.3 billion-dalllar industry by the end of the decade according to optics.org. BCC’s John Richard Rahn is predicting “significant changes” over the next five years as the technology establishes a growing base in biotechnology labs.
